History Part XI Back from the Grave.jpg

1998 update from Misfits.com

On August 10th, 1998 the The Misfits™ began rehearsing with Michale Graves, again, for the upcoming Evilive II Tour.

On August 14th The Misfits™ released Evilive II (EviIIive) as an exclusive Official MisfitsFiend Club release.  The release contained several Misfits songs written by Glenn Danzig even though the out of court settlement forbid them from doing so; Jerry stated that Glenn had still owed Doyle $90,000 and they had to get a lawyer involved so if Glenn wanted to fight it, he could do the same.  The tracks were recorded at several different shows in the fall of 1997 as well as a few from a spring show in 1998.  Also in August the I Wanna Be A New York Ranger single was released (featuring John Cafiero on vocals).

With the band back together, The Misfits™ immediately embarked on the Evilive II Tour; August 29th, 1998-November 11th, 1998. During this time they also began working on their follow up to American Psycho.

The band took some time off beginning in November 1998 until January 1999 when they got together to work on new material. Jerry worked with Daniel Rey and the two wrote several songs together; Jerry took those songs to the other guys to get them motivated to begin writing new material. On April 12th, 1999 they entered Dreamland Recording Studio in Woodstock, NY to begin recording; the recording sessions lasted until June 9th, 1999; 24 tracks in all (4 of which were alternate takes).

Meanwhile in September 1998 Danzig entered the studio to record the follow up to Blackacidevil (October 29th, 1996). Danzig 6:66 Satans Child was released on November 2nd, 1999 through new Evilive Music label mate E-magine Music. The band had done 3 shows in 1998 but hadn't toured heavily since February 1997; they performed a few dates in June/July 1999 but the full Satan's Child Tour didn't begin until October 31st, 1999 at Roxy Theatre in Boston, MA and ran off and on until December 29th, 2001 at Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, CA. Glenn reunited with former Samhain members, Steve Zing and London May and began performing with them (under the Samhain name) as an opening act on the November run of the Satan's Child Tour; Todd Youth (Murphy’s Law, D Generation) performed guitar during these shows.

The Misfits™ sophomore release, Famous Monsters, was released on September 4th, 1999. The band had already begun touring for the upcoming album beginning on June 11th, 1999 at Foundry in Birmingham, England and toured off and on for the release through November 2000.

In November 1999 The Misfits™ began making several appearances (interviews, wrestling, and skits) on WCW Monday Nitro as members of wrestler Vampiro's (Ian Hodgkinson) entourage. Vampiro had previously (early 1999) hooked up with the Insane Clown Posse but the venture didn't pan out so as a reported fiend he sought out Jerry Only. The whole thing came to an end when Jerry found out about reports that Mike, Doyle and Chud were going to ditch him and form a band with Vampiro on bass; which would be featured on WCW. Jerry was making an appearance at NY Toy Fair in February 2000 to promote the Jerry and Doyle 12" action figures from 21st Century Toys when he learned that Mike, Doyle and Chud were going to make an appearance on WCW without him; he immediately got John Cafiero to put a kibosh on it. Presumably this would have been the February 14th, 2000 show at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY (filmed for WCW Monday Nitro) as the NY Toy Fair was going on at that time; Vampiro also appeared on February 16th, 2000 at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, PA that same weekend but that appearance was for WCW Saturday Night and The Misfits™ usually appeared on Monday Nitro. Vampiro also began selling bootleg Vampiro shirts that featured altered artwork by James Rowe.

In October 2000 Michale Graves was unable to gain entrance into Canada so Jerry Only began performing vocals on October 1st, 2000 at MacEwan Hall Ballroom in Calgary, Alberta; the band eventually picked up Zoli Teglas (Ignite) to fill in for the rest of the Canadian tour, beginning on October 10th at Coyote's in Thunder Bay, Ontario through October 19th, 2000 at Barrymore's Music Hall in Ottawa Ontario. It has been rumored that several times during Zoli's tenure Jerry had Doyle and Chud vote on whether to keep Zoli in the band over Mike returning; the vote(s) never went Jerry's way and Michale Graves returned yet again to The Misfits™. On October 21st, 2000 at The Palladium in Worcester, MA both Michale Graves and Zoli performed vocal duties; much to Mike's chagrin. This was to be the beginning of the end of the Misfits™ '95' line-up.

This note was made possible by Misfits Central, James Greene Jr.'s book This Music Leaves Stains as well as various Misfits interviews.  As always thanks to all the fiends (and photographers) that have provided all the photographic history.
